[Mark Tayac] My name is Chief Mark Tayac. I am the 29th generation of Hereditary Chiefs of the Piscataway Indian Nation. I saw a painting of a man wearing a coat. And on the collar of his coat, there was a beaver hide. And my family, our clan is the Beaver Clan. So when I saw the beaver on his coat, that was a time where American Indians were trading with the Dutch, the French, the British. We were trading our beaver hides for metal knives, metal pots. So that coat that he was wearing that was trimmed in beaver hide, that hide came from an American Indian. And it was sent halfways, possibly, around the world so that a coat could be made. And even their top hats! The top hat was made from the beaver hide. So when you ran your hand across it, you thought maybe you were feeling some type of a felt. But that was the fine, intricate hair of the beaver. Why was beaver used? Beaver is a water animal. It’s a natural repellent from rain, from snow. And it kept your head dry and warm.
