In celebration of the opening of Jerrell Gibbs: Come home with me (on view September 16, 2026–May 7, 2027), join us for an onstage conversation with celebrated Baltimore-based artist Jerrell Gibbs and distinguished art historian and curator Dr. Adrienne L. Childs. Comprised of an entirely new body of work, this major solo exhibition is deeply rooted in Baltimore. Dr. Childs and Gibbs will take a close look at Come home with me and discuss the influence of European painting on the artist’s practice, reflections of home and community, and the evolution of Black figurative painting.

About the Speakers

Jerrell Gibbs

Jerrell Gibbs (b. 1988 Baltimore, Maryland) explores the complexities of life by investigating his personal experiences of living and growing up in the United States. His paintings are composites of childhood memories centered around American life and culture, spotlighting stories of the familiar that go unnoticed. Gibbs uses everyday settings as the framework to his paintings to highlight the innumerable similarities humanity shares despite social differences. Gibbs’ work has been featured in a wide range of solo and group exhibitions at the Brandywine Museum of Art, Flag Art Foundation, Spelman College Museum of Fine Art, and Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among numerous others. His work is in the collections of the Brandywine Museum of Art, the Baltimore Museum of Art, Columbus Museum of Art, the Los Angeles Museum of Art, and the Cc Foundation and X Museum in Beijing, China. Gibbs graduated with an M.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, MD in 2020.

Dr. Adrienne L. Childs

Adrienne L. Childs is an independent scholar, art historian, author, and curator. She is Senior Consulting Curator at The Phillips Collection. Her most recent book is an exploration of Black figures in European decorative arts entitled Ornamental Blackness: The Black Figure in European Decorative Arts, published by Yale University Press. She is currently curating Beauford Delaney: So Much Love and Beauty for The Phillips Collection and Jubilee: Celebrating 25 Years of the Driskell Centerat the University of Maryland. Childs was recently co-curator of Out of Many: Reframing an American Art Collectionand Vivian Browne: My Kind of Protest for The Phillips Collection as well as co-curator for The Colour of Anxiety: Race, Sexuality and Disorder in Victorian Sculpture at The Henry Moore Institute in Leeds, England. She was the guest curator of Riffs and Relations: African American Artists and the European Modernist Tradition at The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., 2020. In 2022, Childs won the Driskell Prize for achievement in African American art history.
