The designs woven into Pomo baskets are named much the way quilters name their patterns. The naming of patterns does not, however, indicate a symbolic meaning to the pattern. The weaver can combine, recombine or experiment with elements to create new patterns. The flag-shaped elements appended to the stepped triangles are called "quail feathers." There is no known name for the stepped triangles.
