Most Pomo basketry designs are arranged diagonally or horizontally; occasionally vertical and crossed elements are found. Diagonal compositions create a spiral effect. Most horizontal compositions have intentional breaks in the bands. Turn-of-the-century weavers explained that omitting the break in the band would cause the weaver to go blind.
