=The squash-blossom design is frequently found on 'O'odham baskets. The number of woven petals varies from three to twelve, or more. Proper balance and the spacing of the petals create a striking design. The coils and light brown ground are created with tule stem and willow. Devil's claw, a pronged seed pod, is used to create the black design. The dried pod is softened by soaking and the black fibers are stripped from the outside for use (photo). Field photo: H.
