On the table are two free-blown bottles, used to preserve and serve liquids. They were made by blowing bursts of air into molten glass on the end of a blowpipe and shaping the forms with tools. First attempted by English colonizers in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1608, glassmaking became a small-scale industry along the East Coast, but most glass was imported from Europe until the 1880s.
