The influence of Bakst’s work at Evergreen seems very apparent in this pattern, with its boldly colored triangular shapes interspersed with simple, folk-like designs reminiscent of the stenciled columns of Evergreen Theatre. Although his costume designs sometimes featured arrangements of triangles, no precedent for the pattern has been found in Bakst’s earlier work for the Ballets Russes or other clients.
The department store Lord and Taylor retailed the Bakst silks; however, Bakst advised Alice Garrett to go directly to the Robinson Silk Company to obtain fabrics for herself and her friends. Twenty-seven years later, Mrs. Garrett donated remnants of five Bakst-designed textiles to The Baltimore Museum of Art, most of which, like those exhibited here, are sections of disassembled clothing. These three pieces, plus three others of the same pattern in the BMA collection, were once part of an outfit with harem-style pants.
