Physical Qualities Silk, 31-3/8 x 9-1/2 in. (79.7 x 24.1 cm.)
Credit Line Gift of Mrs. John W. Garrett, Baltimore
Object Number 1950.82.1a
One of seven fragments of white silk crepe printed with rows of stylized floral designs in magenta, bluish-green, yellow, red, red-orange, lavender, yellow or gold, yellow-green, and bluish-purple: (a): A narrow rectangular fragment, with selvage finish on the right edge. The remaining sides are left cut and unbound. (b): A 5-sided pattern piece, possibly a sleeve. The top is basted thus forming a slight gathering--possibly to allow shoulder room. A selvage is found along the left edge. The remaining sides are left cut and unbound. This piece has a signature label of Léon Bakst printed within the selvage, 5-1/4' down from the top. (c): A 5-sided sleeve pattern piece gathered at the top as is piece 'b' with a selvage along the right edge. The remaining sides are cut and unbound. The sloped-shape or ogival top has 1/2'-3/4' wide seams with thread still intact. It appears that a seam has been ripped out along the left side. (d): Probably a dress pattern piece, with lines of shoulder, neck, and armhole still evident. A 33-3/8' long selvage along the left edge includes a printed signature label of Léon Bakst, 13-1/4' from the top. A 5-1/2' high piece of the same printed silk is machine-stitched along the bottom like a band, with the pattern turned up-side down. The right edge has the remains of a machine-stitched 1' wide former seam that runs vertically, top to bottom, with the outermost edge frayed. Stitching was removed from the neckline area, but small needle holes are present. (e): Probably a pattern piece, resembling a half side of a dress panel with an arm opening, shoulder, and neckline with notch mark visible. A selvage runs along the entire right edge. The remaining edges are left cut and unbound. A 5-1/2' high piece of the same silk fabric is machine-stitched at the bottom forming a border rather than a continuous dress panel because of the upside-down alignment of the pattern. A partial seam runs the length of left edge, where the seam was dismantled 8' down from the armhole allowance. A machine-stitched piece is attached at the area of the shoulder line. (f): A shallow, wide, rectangular fragment comprised of two pieces machine-stitched together. The seam is located 6-1/2' from left edge and runs vertically from top to bottom. The lower edge reveals a former seam which has been removed leaving needle marks. All sides are left cut and unbound. (g): An irregularly shaped narrow fragment. The lower edge is cut into a large scale zig-zag pattern creating a series of three points. Selvages are found along the left and right edges. The remaining five edges are left cut and unbound. top to bottom with the outermost edge frayed. Stitching was removed from the neckline area, but small needle holes are present.
