With its adjustable legs and built-in spirit lamp (for burning liquid fuel such as alcohol), the dish cross provided an elegant way to lift plates or bowls off the wooden surface of a table while keeping food or drink warm. The form was rarely made by American silversmiths; imported examples such as this English piece were more common. The shell feet of this dish cross are typical of the rococo style.
