This print commemorates the ill-fated diplomatic mission of Kongolese ambassador Antonio Manuel deFunta to the Vatican in 1608. Manuel, shown here in the central oval portrait wearing European dress,was the cousin of King Alvaro II of Kongo (r. 1587–1614), who sought to broaden Kongo’s internationaldiplomatic relations in the face of an increasingly aggressive Portuguese presence in the region. ThePortuguese had first arrived in Kongo in the 15th century, bringing Catholicism, trade, and culturalinfluence. Nearly two centuries later, the Kongo kingdom had also developed a political and militaryalliance with the Dutch, including through trade with the Dutch West India Company. Manuel reached the Vatican after a three-year detention in Lisbon by the Portuguese. His health failing,he died on January 5, 1608, only two days after his arrival. The two scenes at the bottom of this printshow Pope Paul V (1550–1621) administering last rights to Manuel and the procession to Santa MariaMaggiore that was part of his elaborate funeral.
