Matisse frequently purchased items of clothing for models to wear in his compositions, often choosing examples that featured rich and elaborate decorations or patterns. Here, the ruffled blouse dominates the lower half of the paper, leading the viewer’s eye up the page to the model’s face. The energetic strokes used to create the rhythms of the ruffles contrast with the simpler lines used for the figure’s facial features. Matisse felt his pen and ink drawings from this period were some of his most successful and authentic works, as he could freely express his emotions quickly with his confident line.
