Matisse’s early sculptures of heads, often modeled after his children or family friends, reveal the same free experimentation that we discover in his rapidly drawn etchings of 1914. Just as the sculptor explores the structure of the head or the face with keen attention to volume andmass, so the printmaker uses those same heightened powers of observation to perceive the model’s unique personal traits and transmit them in quickly realized etchings.
Purchased by Etta Cone from the artist, August 1925
