The bright white porcelain of the Official Royal Kiln near Seoul was decorated in shades of blue with two phoenix birds in flight, stretched across the vessel’s broad shoulder, curlicue-tails streaming. Unique features of the Korean jar, compared to Chinese examples in the collection, include the large size of the motif, distinctive stylized clouds, placement of the decoration on a plain ground and in direct relationship to the shape.
