Square band sampler with alphabets, numbers, geometric bands, verses, signature, baskets of fruit and flowers. Sampler has a stylized floral border and bands of geometric borders. Silk embroidery thread colors used are shades of blue, green, yellow, black, medium tan, and white on a beige linen ground. See inscriptions for verse, signature, etc.

Walsh/aged 10 years August 29th./1820/There is nothing of so much/worth as a mind well instructed/God loves the child whose wor/ds are mild.abcdeffghij" Embroidered in black silk thread in cross stitch, center, center: "Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand/As the first effort of an infant hand;/And while her fingers o'er this canvas move./Engage her tender heart to seek thy love;/With thy dear children, let her share a part,/And write thy name thyself upon her heart."
