While designer-or artist-inspired handkerchiefs offer many
colors and patterns useful in repurposing them as wall quilts,
even the simplest examples can be transformed into
unique art objects. In My Broken Foot Blues, so named because
it was completed during the artist's convalescence from
an injury in 1994, Pat Gardner has used varied orientations,
border devices, appliquéd centers, and a monochromatic color
scheme in a bold geometric design that disguises the original
eleven vintage handkerchiefs. Being both affordable and
available, vintage handkerchiefs allow the quilt artist
opportunities for continuous experimentation and creation.
