Small personal treasures such as these miniature boxes were manufactured using the same industrial dust-pressing process that simplified the production of architectural tiles. Both of these images seem to stem from a single mold — the profile of a woman wearing a hat. Variety was achieved without undue labor by reversing the mold, changing details on the hatband, selecting different glaze colors, and varying the height of the brass containers. The boxes recall elaborate English and French gold and enamel boxes of previous centuries.
