St. Florian of Noricum (now part of Austria), a soldier in the Roman army during the 4th century, converted to Christianity and suffered martyrdom by being thrown into a river with a stone tied to his neck. He is credited with having performed a number of miracles, including extinguishing the flames of a burning city by throwing a single bucket of water on the conflagration. As a result of this act, St. Florian is invoked for protection against fire.
