In Girl with Hat, Impressionist Berthe Morisot focused on capturing the play of sunlight over the head of her young model. Applying the pastel in wispy strokes, Morisot contrasted the dazzling yellow of the straw hat and the girl’s brightly lit nose, mouth and chin with the translucent shadows cast over her forehead and eyes.
