Arthur Lasenby Liberty, founder of Liberty & Co., encouraged numerous English arts and crafts designers including Oliver Baker. Starting in the mid-1880s, the firm retailed elegant housewares at a new multi-storey emporium in Regent Street, London. Instrumental in developing art nouveau, the company became so closely identified with this turn-of-the-century style that art nouveau was called “Stile Liberty” in Italy.
