A square Kashmir shawl or rumal with small eight-pointed black center approximately 15-16” wide outlined with multiple borders (red, white, and multicolored floral). This center is of black twill-woven wool with slight remnants left of an embroidered “inscription” in white thread. The field is composed of elongated butas and arabesques showing European design influence. It is woven in twill-tapestry in sections (some following the lines of the design and others forming block shapes) and pieced together. Colors include red, magenta, blue, gold, light and dark green, black, white, pink, and yellow. A narrow 2” woven border separates the field from a wider outer border composed of multiple square and rectangular patches of wool in a variety of colors (red, green, black, turquoise blue, rust brown, white, peach, orange, etc.) On two sides this border consists of rectangular blocks approx. 3-1/2” long (including a short self fringe) by approx. 1” or 1-3/4” wide. On the other two sides, the border is 4” long (including a short self fringe) and the blocks are between 2” and 3” wide. All blocks in the border are embroidered in multicolored threads.
