The severe squared-off form of this vase, as well as the flattened, stylized thistle motifs, adhere to the design tenets of the Aesthetic Movement. Natural forms were meant to inspire ornament but were not supposed to be copied precisely. The color scheme of the vase reprises high-profile London interiors, including Morris, Marshall & Faulkner’s Green Dining Room for the South Kensington Museum (1866 – 1870) and James McNeill Whistler’s Peacock Room (1877), now in the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
