RUA ARAUJO, AND THREE MARIA'S NIGHTLY BREAD

African Art

The BMA’s African Art collection foregrounds art as a vital force in social, spiritual, and political life. Comprising approximately 2,500 works spanning five millennia and nearly every region of the continent, the collection reflects extraordinary material knowledge and artistic vision.

Sculpture, masks, textiles, and adornment form key strengths, revealing how artists marked leadership, honored ancestors, asserted belief, and negotiated power. Many works were meant to be worn, activated, or encountered in motion, emphasizing art’s role beyond static display.

Rather than offering a single story, the collection presents layered histories and distinct artistic traditions. Together, these works invite visitors to engage with African creativity as dynamic, purposeful, and deeply embedded in lived experience.
