One panel from a futon cover that originally measured 64 x 55 1/2 in. (162.6 x 141 cm.)
One of three narrow rectangular panels of indigo and white katazome (stenciled and resist-dyed) fabric. The ground is dyed dark blue with a design of undyed white or off-white. The pattern consists of a repeating design of two chrysanthemums with leaves surrounded by arabesques. The repeat measures approximately H:5-1/2' x W:14' indicating that this was the size of the stencil used to create the design. This piece is one of three sections originally sewn together in one seamed panel, but now separated. The sides are selvage edges; the upper and lower edges are cut and unfinished. Loose threads found along both selvage edges and remnants of padding or batting clinging to the reverse indicate that the textile once had a backing or batting which has been removed. This indicates probable use as part of a futon cover. The ground is a balanced plain-woven fabric of mixed cotton and bast fiber. Warps per inch: 54. Wefts per inch: 42.
