Between 350 and 650, pilgrims from across the Christian world traveled to Abu Mena, Egypt to worship at the tomb of Saint Menas, a 3rd century Egyptian Roman soldier who was martyred for his Christian faith. While there, these pilgrims bought flasks like this one to collect and carry water or oil from the site. On these flasks, Saint Menas is shown between two camels, who were said to have returned his body to Egypt for burial.
