Bobbin Lace in Reticella Design (Reticella fuselli)

1889-1919

Physical Qualities Cotton or linen, 6 x 110 in. (15.2 x 279.4 cm.)
Credit Line Gift of Chris Jeffrey, Baltimore
Object Number 2013.140
A length of bobbin lace made in imitation of Reticella cutwork - a form of needle lace. The lace is hand worked in geometric design with two alternating, repeating motifs of a neo-Gothic style. A medium weight, cream colored thread is used to create a continuing band of work with plaited (rather than button hole covered) bars ornamented with picots and solid areas of toile that appear as if woven. These sections of plain weave are at top and bottom of the wider section of motifs including scallops and circles and "rosettes." The engrelure, about 1/4" wide at the top, is matched with section below the main area. A 2-7/8 to 3" long uncut self fringe hangs from the bottom of the lower edge.
